Huelskamp to visit March 27

LARNED — Kansas First District Congressman Tim Huelskamp will visit Larned at noon Wednesday, March 27 at the Larned Chamber, 502 Broadway.

Rozel UMC soup dinner scheduled Wednesday

ROZEL — The Rozel United Methodist Church will sponsor its annual soup supper from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. The menu will feature soup, dessert and drinks for a free-will donation.

Weather meeting scheduled for Thursday evening

LARNED — Jeff Hutton, meteorologist with the National Weather Service Office in Dodge City, will present a severe weather spotter talk at 7 p.m. Thursday in the J.A. Haas building, 400 E. 18th Street.
All training is free, is open for anyone to attend. Anyone with a desire to learn how to identify severe weather and to learn about the dangers from these storms is encouraged to attend. The program will last about 90 minutes.

Quilt workshop Thursday

LARNED — The public is invited to two mini quilting workshops sponsored by the The Quilting Bees, the local guild, that will celebrate National Quilting Month.
Mary Weber will present the “Infinity Scarf” through demonstration, examples and handouts at 1 p.m. Thursday.  The simple scarf is long and can be folded into layers effecting different styles.  Easy project.  
Virginia Bauer will present ideas using wool at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 28.  Examples of table toppers, ornaments and other unique items will be presented for perusal.

Parenting class to start

LARNED — Valerie Marshall of Fort Larned USD 495 and Holly Corman of the Pawnee County Health Department will start the Incredible Years parenting class April 8 for Pawnee County residents.
The Incredible Years program requires meeting once per week for 14 weeks. The program takes a reflective look at positive parenting strategies, discipline, and behavior modification. The mission and goal of Incredible Years parenting program is to advance the social and emotional behavior of children of all ethnic groups, through a series of interlocking teaching programs supported by more than 25 years of clinically proven worldwide research.
“Our goal is to deliver teaching programs and materials that develop positive parent-teacher-child relationships and assist in recognizing and treating aggressive behavior before a child becomes an adult,” Mrshall said.
Marshall and Corman were trained in December, 2011 to facilitate the Incredible Years parenting program. This program training and materials purchase was made possible by a collaborative effort of USD 495 Parents as Teachers, the Pawnee County Health Department, and the Golden Belt Community Foundation.

Lipid, blood sugar
testing is available

LARNED — The Pawnee County Health Department is offering fasting lipid profiles and blood sugars during the morning hours of their open clinic days — Wednesday and Friday’s, 8:30 to 10 a.m.
Appointments need to be made for the screening test, which requires that you fast for 12 hours. The test is done with a simple finger stick to obtain the blood sample.  The screening test results will tell your total cholesterol, low density lipids (LDL), high density lipids (HDL), triglycerides, plus a blood glucose screening.
Your blood pressure will also be checked. Your results are available within 5 to 7 minutes. Cost of the screening test is $25. No insurance will be billed.
