MACKSVILLE — It has been a Summer of Adventure @ the Macksville City Library.

Our program for 6th grade students and younger ended July 8 with crafts, snacks, prizes and a pool party.

We had a wonderful turnout this year, with final numbers still being tabulated as reading logs are still being submitted.

Special presenters and guests throughout the program were: Jessica Bowman with Share a Story from Smoky Hills Public Television, Mandy Kerns from the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, Jennifer Gleason from K-State Extension 21 Central District, and Lyn Oak from the Macksville Volunteer Fire Department.

Our budget may be small, but the following sponsors stepped up to help make our program a huge success: Dollar General, a $2,125 Summer Reading grant for new books, prizes, instructional supplies and technological advances (soon to come); Golden Belt Telephone, a $100 grant for our grand prizes (the drawing for Adults and Young Adults will be July 31); Pratt Walmart, a $100 donation for snacks and prizes; SCKLS, a $100 Summer Reading grant; Macksville’s The Country Store, providing tokens for all who complete their Reading Log.

At the Final Story Hour, kids got to choose prizes, including a compass, a notepad, a notebook, a flashlight, a box of colored pencils, a mechanical pencil, stickers from Japan, snacks, two books each, and more.

We recognized 15 kids for 100% attendance to all six Story Hours, and then came the moment they were all waiting for: the prize drawings.

Juan Villanueva was our Grand Prize Winner, taking home with a sleeping bag, a set of Nerf balls, a telescoping marshmallow fork and all the fixin’s to make S’MORES! Needless to say, many offered to visit his house for a cookout that night.

We also drew six lucky names for Summer Reading T-Shirts and five lucky names for posters.

And, finally, we drew names for the huge Pokemon floaties that everyone was hoping to win. The way to enter the drawing was to attend at least two story hours, to turn in a completed Reading Log and to fill out a book recommendation card for up to six books that you would recommend to someone.

Here are some of the recommendations that might help you find a fun book:

• Cat Kid Comic Club Influencers – “I loved this book- It was such a good one.” –Natalie.

• A to Z Mysteries – “These books are so so so funny & easy to read!” – Blakely.

• Search for the Giant Squid – “It has so many twists and turns!” – Raylan.

• Just Me & My Friend – “I liked how nice of a friend Little Critter was.” – Gentry.

• Pinkalicious – “I liked that her body changed colors when she ate too many cupcakes.” – Lucy.

Excited winners of the Pokemon floaties were: Raylan Gales, Jake Rempel and Adlley Dutton.

Following the pool party, everyone had the option to enjoy fresh cut watermelon and frozen ice pops.

We are beyond grateful to all who helped make Summer Reading 2024 a success!

Along with the presenters and sponsors, we gratefully acknowledge the parents and grandparents who helped make Summer Reading a priority, and our volunteers and board members who stepped up to provide snacks and much appreciated assistance.

The Summer Reading Story Hours may be over, but your reading adventure can last all year long.

Drop by for the Library Crawl, for books, games, activity sheets, computers and to help complete our sticker mural.
