ELLINWOOD —This past January, the final Big Al Memorial Basketball Tournament was held. "We met the goal of $10,000 so that the scholarship in Alan’s memory will be endowed," said Virginia Fullbright, Alan’s mother. "It is the generosity of the Ellinwood community, school system, Ellinwood High School students, instructors, sponsors, family and friends that has made this possible.

"In addition to the $10,000, we have also been able to give four $250 scholarships each year for an additional $6,000," she said. "The criteria for the scholarship are a reflection of what was significant in Alan’s life."

The criteria are:

•First will be given to an education major attending a Kansas college.

•Second to students who are going to attend either of Barton Community College or Fort Hays State University, Alan’s alma maters.

• Student who showed leadership in high school by holding an office in a school activity.

The winners were: Kristi DeWerff , majoring in Elementary Education at BCC; Michelle Miller, majoring in Elementary Education at BCC; Rana Ahmadi, majoring in Secondary Education and plans to attend the University of Kansas; and Michelle Klepper, attending BCC. She held the offices of student council secretary, vice president, president, class secretary, class president and Future Business Leaders of America vice president and president.
