A citizen who thought he or she was seeing a burglary in progress contacted the Barton County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday night, resulting in two arrests. Sheriff Brian Bellendir said a stolen propane cylinder was recovered.
The citizen called 911 between 8 and 9 p.m. Tuesday. Detective Sharon Wondra responded and located the suspects and a vehicle on U.S. 281, just north of Great Bend. The suspects drove off but were stopped by detectives and deputies in the city of Great Bend. Mark Miller and Robert Streiner, both of Great Bend, were arrested and booked into the Barton County Jail on charges of misdemeanor theft and possession of stolen property. The vehicle Miller was driving was impounded and searched after obtaining a warrant.
Miller has been released after posting a $1,000 surety bond, but Steiner remained in custody as of late Thursday morning.
“It is anticipated the results of that search warrant will lead to clearance of other burglaries and thefts as well as further arrests,” Bellendir stated in a news release.
“Thanks to the assistance from the public and the quick actions of detective Wondra, arrests were made and property was recovered,” Bellendir said. The Barton County Sheriff’s Office encourages people to call 911 any time there is suspicious activity or they suspect a crime is in progress. Anyone with information about stolen property or crimes that have already occurred is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers, 792-1300, or the Detective Division at the BCSO, 793-1876.
