Mak Mervin Brack

Mak Mervin Brack, 90, of Great Bend, Kan,, passed away on Aug. 17, 2026, at River Bend Assisted Living. His family finds peace knowing he was welcomed into heaven and reunited with his treasured wife of 69 years, Marlene. Mak was born March 6, 1936, in Rush Center, Kan., to Edna Brack. His mother passed away when he was just three years old, and he was raised by his grandmother, Justina Brack, who fondly called him “Mackey Boy.”

Mak graduated from LaCrosse High School in 1954. In 1956, he married Marlene Deanna Folkerts, beginning a marriage and partnership that would span 69 years. It was during this time that Mak’s journey of faith began. Together, Mak and Marlene built their marriage and family on a foundation of faith, love and service to Christ, first at Hope Lutheran Church in Rush Center and then for more than 57 years at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend.

Mak faithfully served in many church leadership positions and on numerous boards, dedicating his time, talents and treasures to the church he loved. One of those talents was his beautiful singing voice, which he generously shared throughout the years. Mak sang on numerous occasions at church services and funerals, using his voice as another expression of his faith and service to others. Through the years, their church family became an important part of Mak and Marlene’s life together, providing lasting friendships, fellowship and a community in which they raised “the girls.” Their shared faith remained at the heart of their marriage throughout their lives. Marlene preceded him in death on Feb. 8, 2026.

Mak began his business career as assistant manager of the LaCrosse grocery store, where he and Marlene made their first home together. In 1968, they moved to Garden City and, in 1969, settled in Great Bend. Mak managed the sporting goods department at JCPenney before transferring to the carpet department at Sears and Roebuck. In 1987, he became co-owner and operator of Brack and Henning Floor Covering, serving the community for nearly 20 years before retiring.

More than his work or accomplishments, Mak treasured his family. He loved spending time outdoors, participating in family activities and gathering around the table for a good game of cards. An especially skilled card player, Mak loved playing Pitch and Pinochle and rarely missed an opportunity for a game. Some of his greatest joy came simply from being together with those he loved and watching his family grow.

Mak’s life was shaped by perseverance, devotion to family, service to others and, above all, faith. From the little boy raised by his grandmother to the husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather he became, his life was grounded in love and in the promise of Christ. His family finds comfort knowing that the faith Mak and Marlene shared throughout their life together has reunited them in their heavenly home.
