Staff members and volunteers at St. Rose Health Center are ready for their next walk-in blood screening, which is open to the public. The event is scheduled for 6:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at St. Rose.

“This will be our third screening since we started our new program and already the service has become popular,” said Karen Stewart, medical lab technician. “We encourage the community to take advantage of this opportunity for affordable, preventive health care.”

Services include a $25 blood profile that entails a complete blood count; comprehensive analysis of more than 20 blood chemistries; lipid profile for a breakdown of cholesterol and triglyceride numbers; and a thyroid test.

Fasting for 10-12 hours is highly recommended for a blood profile.

However, fasting isn’t necessary for the other two tests at the screening. One is the $16 PSA that checks a man’s prostate and the other is the $7.50 HGBA1C test for diabetes.

“Our goal was to make this as affordable and convenient as possible,” Stewart commented. “Many participants have told us we have reached our goal. We encourage even more participation because these screenings can help you prevent or alleviate medical problems down the road.”

It is not necessary to have a doctor’s referral or an appointment for the screenings. Results will be mailed 5-7 business days after the tests and patients can give the results to their doctors if they choose. Cash and checks are accepted.
