No one was injured and a family pet was rescued and resuscitated following an early morning fire on Thursday, June 15, Great Bend Interim Fire Chief Brent Smith said.

At about 12:31 a.m. on Thursday, the Great Bend Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire in the 5700 block of Rosewood Dr. in Great Bend. The first units on scene found heavy smoke and fire coming from the single-family residence, Smith said.

“Crews made a quick interior attack and were met with high heat and heavy smoke conditions,” he said. They were able to quickly locate and extinguish the fire.

Meanwhile, a search was done of the residence to make sure no one was inside. Crews did locate a family pet inside that was not breathing when they exited. Fire crews were able to resuscitate the pet, which was turned over to animal control for care.

The GBFD investigator said  the cause of the fire is undetermined, although it was not considered suspicious in nature. The case has been turned over to the State Fire Marshal’s Office for further investigation.

The Great Bend Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Great Bend Police Department, Kansas Gas Service and Wheatland Electric.
