ODIN — The Odin Rodeo Grounds kicks off its season with its first Sidewinders Bulls and Barrels series event for 2022 this weekend at the Prosser Arena. The schedule has room for a few more entries for the Friday event, which is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
Last year, the Prosser Arena on NE 140 Road west of Odin hosted a full schedule through the spring, summer and early fall. It was the first year that the grounds sported activities since sitting idle for almost two decades. After monthly events beginning in April, the season concluded last Oct. 9 with finals, mutton busting, two rounds of bull riding and barrel racing.
After this Friday’s opener, the 2022 season follows a similar schedule with bulls and barrels events on May 13, June 18, Sept. 9 and Oct. 8.
Other associated events include a benefit dance on July 3 and the second annual Odin Rodeo on Aug. 5-6.
Odin Rodeo
Norbert J “Bones” Prosser is credited as the brainchild behind the Odin facility and donated the ground for the arena now named for him. It features a large parking area, with two sets of grandstands and several portable metal bleachers capable of seating 2,000 rodeo guests.
From 1987 to 1990, Odin was recognized as the Rodeo of the Year by the Kansas State Rodeo Association. Although nothing was scheduled at the grounds after 1999, the facility remained in the Prosser family and Prosser’s son Abe rekindled the idea to host events planned for 2020.
Deidre Moran, a local professional horse trainer, hosted a couple of events, but the pandemic slowed progress that year.
After working with Jason Bell of Bell Bucking Bulls at Hedville, the Sidewinder Bulls & Barrels series was offered in 2021.
Moran is currently taking entries and selling tickets for the 2022 season.
“We welcome everybody to come to the Odin Rodeo Grounds for true Western action at its best,” she said.
