Members of the Great Bend Fire Department B shift were out on the ice at Stone Lake this afternoon, training for cold water and icy rescue scenarios. The department has a dive team with members on each shift, but Friday’s exercises were to give all firefighters the tools needed to perform a rescue. This is essential since the survival window for victims is small and it may take time for the entire dive team to assemble on scene. Pictured above are Daren Stewart, right, and Kaleb Karnosky carefully working their way out onto the ice, testing its thickness as they go. Below, Karnosky uses a chainsaw to cut through the ice. Supervisors stressed safety always came first and that everyone out on the water must be tethered to someone on the shore.
