KINGMAN — The Larned boys shook off a slow start here Tuesday to race to a 68-38 Central Kansas League victory over Kingman. The Indians battled illness and injury, resulting in a changed starting lineup. Foul problems caused more concern as Larned had to dig deep into their bench. The two teams were tied 16-16 after one period. Kingman’s Logan Adelhardt scored 11 first-quarter points.
Larned battled to a 34-27 halftime lead with several starters sitting out the second quarter.
The Indians unleashed a potent fast-break offense while pitching a third-quarter shutout. Larned outscored the Eagles 19-0 in the third period for a 53-27 lead.
Larned made 24 of 37 from the free throw line and shot 59 percent from the field. They converted turnovers into easy baskets.
The Indians finished with five players in double figures led by Jordan Zimmerman’s 13. He was backed up by Dalton Bright and Evan Skelton with 12 each while Tanner Galliart and Isiah Perez chipped in 10 apiece. Galliart also plucked nine rebounds. The Indians converted five 3-pointers. Will Carson led Kingman (0-14, 0-5 CKL) with 17 points.
Coach Don Zimmerman praised the defensive effort of his team.
“We were not good on the defensive end in the first quarter, but I thought our defense, especially our help defense, in the second and third quarters was terrific,” Zimmerman said.
The Indians (10-4, 4-1 CKL) entertain Halstead (6-8, 3-2 CKL) in Frday’s homecoming game.
