LARNED — Larned’s campaign for back-to-back baseball league titles started with a dominating sweep over Haven, 15-0 in three innings and 10-2.
Larned (2-0) plays at home Friday against Central Kansas League leader Halstead (4-0).
“Everything was line drives. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a team hit like that in an opener,” said Larned coach Chad Erway. “We got off to a really good start.”
Coach Erway said the Indians kept their composure and put together a solid second game.
“We were really positive about how we played,” Erway said. “First time out, we were really pleased.”
In the opener, pitcher Evan Skelton preserved a two-hit shutout by striking out Ruben Romero with two runners on base in the second inning.
Larned’s baserunners reached base on 19 of 25 plate appearances. The Indians started with a five-run first inning and added 10 runs in the second inning.
Perez drilled a bases-loaded triple and drove in four runs. Mason Schartz, Evan Skelton, Tyler Stelter and Johnathon Herter each drove in two runs.
In the first inning, Landon Erway, Isiah Perez, Johnathon Herter and Trey Kraisinger drove in runs.
In the second inning, Perez ignited a 10-run inning with a three-run triple. Herter’s RBI double was followed by two-run doubles by Evan Skelton and Stelter and a two-run single by Schartz. Mason Schartz had three hits and Evan Skelton and Perez each had two hits.
In the nightcap, the Indians used a six-run fourth inning to break the game open. Winning pitcher Erway yielded three first-inning hits, but worked out of trouble. Catcher Stelter threw out Jordan Shafer and Eric Williams was thrown out in a rundown.
Erway delivered an RBI double and Stelter singled home Erway for a 2-0 lead. Gage Skelton singled home Colton Gladow for a 4-1 lead. Evan Skelton followed Gage Skelton’s RBI single with a three-run triple in the fourth inning. Erway singled home Skelton and Isiah Perez singled home Erway for a 10-1 lead.
Erway, Stelter and Gage Skelton each had two hits.
Perez pitched the final two innings after Erway worked five innings.
