Lyons sweeps Larned softball

LYONS — After getting run-ruled 10-0, the Larned Indians rallied to lose 5-4 to Lyons in a softball doubleheader plagued by rainy weather and poor field conditions Tuesday.
Morgan Michaelis drove in four runs and Ashlee Tingle and Brenna McClure drove in runs off losing pitcher Shay Shepherd. The Indians committed three errors in a four-run third inning.
“We talked between games about the quick turnaround and the ability to get back on track and we did just that,” said Larned coach Dustin Wilson. “Mattie Glover threw well and we played pretty good defense behind her. Our girls hit the ball very well in game two.”
Shepherd doubled and Maci Perez singled her home. Alexis Langdon’s double brought home Perez for a 2-0 lead.
Lyons rallied with a three-run first inning. Michaelis drilled a two-run homer after a walk to Brooke Johnson. Lauren Barker singled and scored on an error.
Larned had its shot, loading the bases with no one out in the second inning. But Laura Pineda struck out Erin Smith and Annie Russum and retired Shepherd on a groundout.
“We had bases loaded and zero outs, and couldn’t get the run home,” Wilson said. “We need to be better in those situations, but I was pleased with how we got back in it mentally. We are a pretty good team, and need to expect to play that way and compete. We don’t play any softies the rest of the way so we need to compete from the first pitch.”
Tymarra Bryant’s single scored Shepherd for a 3-3 tie through five innings. Lyons scored two runs in the sixth on a walk, hit batter, base hit and several passed balls fora  5-3 lead.
Maci Perez homered in the seventh inning. But Laura Pineda retured Langdon for the final out.
Mattie Glover had two hits in the opener off Ruth Pineda.
“We struggled in game one to hit the ball,” Wilson said. “Their pitcher did a nice job of moving the ball around. We weren’t as engaged as we needed to be. We had three errors in one inning that cost us. Lyons is too good to play like that against and think you have a shot.”
Lyons improves to 11-5 and Larned drops to 7-11. Larned plays at Kingman Friday and at Pratt May 12. The Indians compete in the May 19 Larned softball regional with Hoisington (10-8), Thomas More Prep (8-8) and Nickerson (0-16).
