Glennda French and Susan Williams are both running for Barton County Register of Deeds. French is the incumbent; she was elected to the post by the Barton County Republican Precinct Committee on Aug. 3, 2023, after her boss, Pam Wornkey, announced her retirement. Williams had worked in the office previously and was an applicant for the position vacated by Wornkey.
The Great Bend Tribune sent each candidate the same questions and received the following answers.
Glennda French Ellinwood
What do you believe qualifies you for this office? My dedication to the people of Barton County and my desire to continue serving them makes me the best candidate for the position of Register of Deeds. I am proud to have implemented several new services since taking office ten months ago. Online records e-search, passport photos and a notification system for our residents are just a few of the improvements I have made to the deeds office. I am continuously improving my skills with training courses and seminars. I have an excellent understanding of the Register of Deeds policies and procedures. I strive to provide a customer service experience that exceeds expectation. There have been many changes, advances and improvements since my opponent has worked for the Register of Deeds.
The fact that I have been in the deed’s office for the last four years also means that I am proficient in all aspects of the position. I know that I am prepared for any challenges that may come my way in the future and I will meet them head on.
What do you see as the Number One issue in this election? I feel the election should be based on the qualifications of the candidate and not based on popularity. Please research each candidate’s abilities and integrity before casting your vote.
Susan Williams, Great Bend
What do you believe qualifies you for this office? I have eight years of experience working in the Register of Deeds office, having served as a Certified Deputy Register of Deeds for seven of those years. I have a true passion for the nature of the work and understand the importance of the essential functions required by a Register of Deeds. Additionally, I have demonstrated leadership abilities as well as the skills required to serve as Barton County Register of Deeds. I want to work for the PEOPLE of Barton County as a steward and public servant.
What do you see as the Number One issue in this election? Although the Register of Deeds Office has no policy making authority, I think the overall issue in this election is the politically charged climate on a national, state and local level. I, for one, want to see Barton County continue to move forward in a positive way as we work together to provide a bright future for the residents of Barton County. This particular primary is quite extraordinary in the fact that this is the first primary in more than 30 years where the Register of Deeds and the County Clerk offices have been contested.
