ELLINWOOD — As many boys step to the batter’s box this summer on well-groomed ball fields, brothers Seth and Micah Winget will step into the mission field prepared to serve their God. Seth, 10, will travel to Africa, and Micah, 12, will be headed to Australia, just as their parents, Jason and Harmony Winget, did separately in 1993.
Another type of serving will take place from 5-8 p.m. Friday, May 5, when the Winget family hosts a chili cook-off in Ellinwood’s Wolf Park as a fundraiser for their expenses.
The public will decide the winner of bragging rights with freewill donations cast into voting boxes placed before each pot of chili. The pot with the most donations will be the winner.
Harmony Winget will have items at a dessert table, and an inflatable obstacle course will be set up in the park, which is located on Ellinwood’s Main Street.
Anyone wanting to enter a batch of chili can contact Jason Winget by calling 620-617-7026.
Africa and Australia
The boys will be traveling abroad with Teen Missions International, but first they will travel to Florida at the end of June for two weeks of boot camp. They will receive intensive training in primitive living.
Seth will travel to Malawi, Africa, where Harmony Winget served through the same program 20 years ago, ready to interact with the orphans at the Melisa Foster Rescue Unit. He will be asked to work on building projects, puppet shows, music, drama and evangelism. On Sundays he will enter the surrounding areas to share the Gospel in local churches, public schools and city squares.
A few thousand miles away, Micah Winget will arrive in the land Down Under, the home of the late Steve Irwin. “Crocodile Hunter” Irwin was one of the reasons Micah was drawn to Australia, family friend Amber Rugan stated in a news release.
Another reason was that his father served at the very same Bible, Missionary and Work Training Center nearly 20 years ago. While stationed at this location Micah will work on building projects and sharing the Gospel to the local Australians and Aborigines.
Their free time will be spent memorizing scripture, studying the bible and ultimately growing into more spiritually mature young men, Rugan said. There will also be some fun days, with a trip to the Australian Zoo for Micah and an African photo safari for Seth.
