The Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education has approved next year’s list of school fundraisers, but one board member declined to vote for the list, wanting more information about a new photo shoot calendar for the GBHS Danceline.
The fundraisers were approved at the Monday, Jan. 13 school board meeting by a vote of 6-1, with Jacquie Disque voting “no.” Disque wanted more information about the Danceline’s plan to sell 2021 photo shoot calendars in November and December. She said she wanted to see the calendars before voting to approve them.
Superintendent Khris Thexton didn’t have a lot of information at the time, except to say this is a newer fundraiser and that the calendars will be previewed before they are released.
Danceline’s first calendars were sold last year. Members later posted photos from their 2019-2020 calendar on the GBHS Danceline Facebook page, thanking those who supported the first calendars.
“With this being a fairly new fundraiser, I just wanted to make sure there were procedures in place to make sure the quality of the product met the standard of the district,” Disque told the Great Bend Tribune this week. “It appears to be a very well-received fundraiser and the Danceline has done a great job putting the calendar together.”
Other Danceline fundraisers include selling Great Bend T-shirts in August and September, and in April of 2021 they will again offer a Flamingo Flocking fundraiser. People can make a donation to have a flock of plastic pink flamingos land in someone’s yard, or they can pay to have them removed. Flamingo Insurance is also available, Thexton said, noting his yard has been “flocked” a time or two.
School organizations typically add their fundraisers to the list for board approval to make sure families aren’t overly burdened with multiple promotions all taking place at the same time, Thexton said.
Fundraiser requests approved for 2020-2021:
• GBHS Athletic Department will sell Panther Cards in July and August.
• GBHS FFA will sell Yoder meat sticks throughout the school year.
• GBHS Vocal Music will sell “Believe” magazines, food, chocolates and gift items, Aug. 26 through Sept. 12 and Oct. 16-31.
• Riley School will sell Red Wheel products Aug. 27 through Sept. 9.
• GBHS Madrigals will sell chili supper tickets in September. (The Band and Orchestra sell these tickets for Fall Homecoming on odd years.)
• Eisenhower PTA will sell JT Enterprises - Simply Delicious cookie dough, Sept. 9-20.
• Park School Booster Club will sell Red Wheel food products Sept. 20 through Oct. 1.
• Jefferson PTO will sell Butter Braids from Oct. 1-13.
• GBHS Danceline will sell GB T-shirts August through September.
• GBHS Band and Orchestra will sell Cherrydale Co. food and gift items, many of a holiday nature, Oct. 21 through Nov. 4.
• GBMS Booster Club will sell River City Fundraising food, chocolates and gift items, and Krispy Kream Donuts, Oct. 29 through Nov. 12.
• GBHS Kayettes will sell Sherwood Forest Farms holly wreaths, centerpieces, etc., throughout November.
• GBHS Dance Line will sell 2021 “Photoshoot” calendars in November and December.
• GBHS Vocal Music will set Hog Feed tickets in January and February 2021. They sell these for Winter Homecoming on odd years.
• Park School Booster Club will sell Fundraiser Favorites trash bags Feb. 1-15, 2021.
• GBHS Student Council will sell bierocks, pigs in a blanket and cinnamon rolls Feb. 6-24, 2021.
• Lincoln PTO will sell “Believe” magazines, food, chocolates and gift items May 6-25, 2021.
• GBHS Danceline will sell Flamingo Flocking starting April 13, 2021.
