There’s never a guaranteed date for agreeable weather. Last year’s Golden Belt Glow for Life, a walk/run intended to raise awareness about suicide and raise money to support local suicide prevention education, was hit by rain, organizer Holly Bowyer recalls.
“Then a lovely rainbow came out,” she said.
Registration has begun for this year’s Golden Belt Glow for Life, a suicide prevention evening walk or 5K run at Veterans Memorial Park. The event takes place on Saturday, Sept. 28, starting at the large shelter west of the lake. There will be a Remembrance Ceremony for individuals lost to suicide at 6:30 p.m.; warm-up at 7:15 and the run will start at 7:30 p.m.
This is a project of the Central Kansas Partnership’s Suicide Prevention Task Force. Holly Bowyer at The Center for Counseling said it is one of the organizers.
Community sponsors are also being sought.
The pre-registration fee is $25 until Sept. 13 and guarantees a T-shirt, glow accessories and snacks. Registrations received after Sept. 13 are not guaranteed to receive a T-shirt and glow accessories.
Late registration is $30 and will be available at the event starting at 6 p.m.
The sponsors are also taking orders for memorial luminaries, which cost $10 each.
Forms for sponsorships, luminaries and the Glow for Life event registration will soon be posted on the Central Kansas Partnership website. Meanwhile, sponsorship forms can be found on Facebook by searching for Suicide Prevention - Central KS Partnership, and anyone wanting to register or ask questions can contact Bowyer at The Center, 620-792-2544.
Bowyer said the sponsors have received four possible designs for this year’s event T-shirts so far and are accepting shirt designs until Friday, Aug. 9. Members of the task force will meet on Aug. 14, and vote on a design.
This is the 12th annual Golden Belt Glow for Life. It takes place later in the year so as not to conflict with the Great Bend Airport Airfest, going on Sept. 20-22. A separate event, Pedal for Prevention - Devin’s Memorial Bike Ride, is typically scheduled for the week after the Glow Run but it won’t take place until next spring. The first Pedal for Prevention was in 2021.
