Barton club hosts summer activities for kids

Throughout the summer, the Barton Community College STEM Club has provided fun-filled activities for children who attend the college’s Child Development Center, to help foster an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, which Biology Instructor Charlotte Cates said is of the utmost importance.

“The U.S. is facing a shortage of workers in STEM fields, which threatens our economy and national security,” she said. “By engaging young children in STEM activities, we hope to spark an interest in these fields and show children the real-world application of these disciplines.”

Cates said participants not only get a jumpstart into the world of STEM in an exciting way, but they also get to socialize with others along the way.

“For each child, it is a chance to participate in activities that keep them curious about how the world around them works,” she said. “These kids truly enjoy the activities and interacting with their peers while learning at the same time.”

About Barton STEM Club

STEM Club at Barton is an extra-curricular activity that allows students of all ability levels who express an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to experience all four subjects through innovative hands-on interactive learning. The club encourages research and development, promotes education in the STEM fields, gives education majors support as they enter their pre-service curriculum, and provides community outreach opportunities.

Cates said STEM Club is a great way to supplement and nurture Barton students pursuing careers in STEM-related fields and help them collaborate and grow.

“We hope that we can get kids excited about STEM over the years and it’s always awesome to see our local kids out at Barton to learn and as part of the STEM club as well.”
