Icy road conditions are believed to have caused a three-car crash reported at 2:26 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 56 east of Great Bend near the Fort Zarah park.
One person suffered critical injuries. The conditions of the other persons were unknown as of presstime.
One vehicle rolled over and was on its top, and another vehicle had heavy front-end damage. Condition of third vehicle was unknown.
Barton County Sheriff’s office, and the Great Bend Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services crews were assisting at the scene.
The wreck caused the entire road to be blocked off by local law enforcement agencies.
Kansas Department of Transportation was also notified.
As the afternoon and evening wore on, road conditions in the Barton County area were becoming hazardous due to freezing rain, the Barton County Communications Office reported. Roadways were becoming slick especially on bridges and overpasses.
Driving was being discouraged unless necessary and if traveling, drivers were urged to proceed with extreme caution.
