Pictured is the U.S. 50/281 roundabout in Stafford County looking east on U.S. 50. The roundabout is now open.

The new roundabout at U.S. 50 and U.S. 281 in Stafford County has completely opened, said Tim Potter, Hutchinson-based Kansas Department of Transportation public affairs manager. The roundabout is three miles south of St. John, 48 miles west of Hutchinson and 28 miles south of Great Bend.

The project, which was overseen by the Kansas Department of Transportation and built in phases, features a circular inner road for regular traffic and a diamond-shaped outer road for oversize loads.

Motorists yield to the left as they enter the roundabout.

The roundabout is designed to reduce the chance of a high-speed, T-bone collision and to ease the way for oversized trailers.

Venture Corp., of Great Bend, was the primary contractor.
