USD 428 ends Fiscal Year

Thursday morning was Khris Thexton’s final Board of Education meeting as interim superintendent of Great Bend USD 428. His appointment to the superintendent’s position became official on Saturday.
The school board held a special meeting to wrap up the fiscal year and other pending business. Thexton reported that, in light of recent legislative and court decisions, the district ends 2016-2017 fiscally sound. He will be developing a timeline for crafting the 2017-2018 budget.
Budget transfers and balances were approved.
In other business:
• Insurance was approved for 2017-2018. The property and liability insurance coverage through Insurance Planning will cost $182,745, an increase of $18,005 over the prior year premium of $164,740 with Fee Insurance, who provided service for the district from 2013-2017. The difference in previous year’s rate was attributed to vans being reported as buses and additional coverage.
• Approval was given to purchase a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan with 33,861 miles as an eventual replacement for Special Services Van No. 296. The cost of the van is $17,895.
• Brenda Unrein was hired to teach fifth grade at Riley Elementary School.
