Veterans Day programs planned in Great Bend and Larned

The Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 27 is in charge of this year’s Veterans Day program at Veterans Memorial Park in Great Bend. Chapter Adjutant Cody Helms said it will start at 10:50 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, on the north side of the park near the Avenue of Flags and military artillery displays.

The Great Bend High School band will perform at this program.

This is the GBHS band’s only Veterans Day stop this year and the school will not be having its usual Veterans Day assembly, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

GBHS Band Director Grant Mathews also noted that there will not be a Veterans Day ceremony this year at the Golden Belt Memorial Park.

Larned will continue its tradition of a Veterans Day Parade, to be held downtown. It begins at 4th and Broadway at 10:45 a.m., stopping at 11 a.m. at 5th and Broadway. City sirens will sound and “Taps” will be played, followed by the release of memorial balloons and a gun salute. The parade ends at 8th and Broadway.
