Waters True Value has donated $4,000 to the Oklahoma City Red Cross. The effort to contribute to the disaster relief efforts came after an EF5 tornado left a 17-mile path of destruction and damaged 4,000 homes and businesses in the Oklahoma City area on May 20.
Waters True Value utilized Facebook to bring awareness about relief efforts to the community. Waters’ encouraged their Facebook friends to share a “Pray for Oklahoma” status with a promise of donating one dollar to the disaster relief efforts for each share. After only two days, the status generated over 2,000 shares. The True Value Corporation in Chicago continued the endeavor by matching the amount, resulting in a $4,000 donation given to the Oklahoma City Red Cross.
Red Cross has shelters set up in numerous communities to aid the distressed during the rebuilding efforts. The Red Cross responds to approximately 70,000 disasters in the United States each year and their efforts range from home fires to natural disasters. In such events, the Red Cross provides food, shelter, health and mental health services to help families and communities during devastating times.
