Weekend waterline breaks affect 10th street businesses

Winter weather conditions are the likely cause of two water main breaks that disrupted service to the business area in the 3900 block of 10th St. in Great Bend. Several restaurants and other businesses reported being without water on Monday.

Great Bend Public Works Director Jason Cauley said a main break in the vicinity of 10th and Main Street was discovered around midnight Saturday.

“We had crews out until about 3-4 a.m.,” Cauley said.

Crews were dispatched to another break in the vicinity of 10th and Roosevelt that was being attended to all day Saturday until about 10 p.m., when the order was given to resume on Monday.

Cauley said water was shut off at both locations.

“We did resume this morning (Monday) and they are actually getting close to possibly finishing up,” Cauley said. “They have identified the problem and are working to resolve it.” He could not say exactly when the water would be back on, other than sometime soon.

Cauley explained that it is possible the cold, dry weather has caused the ground to contract. “When it contracts like that, things shift around and break,” he said.
