The Wetlands Waterpark in Great Bend is scheduled to open Monday, June 15. Staff are in training this week, Pool Manager Megan Hammeke said.
This year’s training included some new rules from the Red Cross on how to perform “saves” at the pool.
Although city officials previously announced days at the park would be divided into two sessions, the easing of COVID-19 restrictions means it will now be open during regular hours, from 12:30-5:30 p.m. daily through Aug. 9. Family Swim Nights are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. and feature discounted admission.
“We are working hard to keep you safe this summer while you enjoy our pool,” a Wetlands Facebook post states. It explains some of the precautions taken to protect employees and the public, and ways pool-goers can help, too:
• Slide lines have been clearly marked for social distancing.
• Staff will wash hands often, for at least 20 seconds.
• Shower off before getting into the water.
• There will be no shower curtains in bathrooms; come dressed in your swimsuit.
• Visitors should stay in their family units as much as possible.
• High-touch attractions that are difficult to keep properly sanitized are closed. These include the Water Wars water balloon battle area, basketball goal and the tunnel, as well as lounge chairs. Individuals may bring their own chairs.
• The Wetlands has added extra employees to clean the facility and high touch-surfaces regularly throughout open swim times.
Hammeke is also the aquatics director at the Great Bend Recreation Commission, which offers swimming lessons. For more information call the Rec, 793-3755 or visit www.greatbendrec.net.
