ELLINWOOD — A vehicle started a grass fire Friday afternoon east of Ellinwood. Ellinwood Fire Chief Spencer Proffitt said conditions are so dry that it rekindled on Sunday.
The initial fire was at 12:16 p.m. Friday in a ditch 2 miles east of Ellinwood on U.S. 56. The motorist was having car trouble and pulled over, resulting in the grass catching on fire.
Firefighters extinguished the flames but an officer drove by the area around 3 p.m. Sunday and saw grass in the ditch was smoldering. “It just rekindled,” he said. It was extinguished again.
