Man dies after motorcycle collides with dog Tuesday

Daniel McKay, 69, died Tuesday evening after a motorcycle he was driving collided with a dog on a Great Bend roadway.

According to a Great Bend Police Department release, at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, GBPD officers were dispatched to the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Van Fleet Lane in Great Bend in reference to an injury crash.

Upon arrival, citizens in the area were providing medical attention to McKay, who was lying in the roadway, unresponsive. Officers also found a blue 2006 Big D motorcycle lying in the roadway. 

Investigating officers determined McKay was traveling east on Broadway Avenue and struck a large dog that was running north across the roadway. McKay was ejected from the motorcycle upon impact. The Great Bend Fire Department Emergency Medical Service began treatment on McKay, and he was transported to University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus, where he was later pronounced deceased. McKay was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The dog was also found deceased in the roadway. The owner of the dog was later contacted by officers.

The Barton County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with the crash.
