Christine Beakey, 87, died Oct. 4 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born March 16, 1924, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of Arthur Louis "Red" and Isabella (Schwager) Beakey. A Great Bend resident since 1932, coming from Chicago, she was a 1941 graduate of Great Bend High School. She was a welder during World War II, and a bookkeeper for Jule’s Glass Company and the Barton County Treasurer’s Office.

Ms. Beakey was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, the Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella, American Legion Argonne Post 180 Auxiliary and was the past District 7 Legion Auxiliary president.

Survivors include two sisters, Ruth Piltz, of Denver, Colo., and Marian Call of Great Bend; and a brother, Augustine James "Jim" Beakey of Adolphus, Ky. She was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Beakey; a sister, Stella Devine; and a nephew, Augustine James "Bimbo" Beakey.

Altar Society rosary will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Vigil service with Daughters of Isabella rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the church with Father Don Bedore officiating. Burial will be at the Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may visit from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home.
