RUSSELL — Herman J. Hammerschmidt, 98, of Russell, died Oct. 25 at Russell Regional Hospital in Russell. Herman was born on June 23, 1912, in Walker, the son of Jacob and Anna (Geist) Hammerschmidt. He grew up and attended public schools in Walker and lived all his life in the Walker, Victoria and Russell areas. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Teckla Sander on June 1, 1937, in Victoria. From this union Herman and Teckla were blessed with three sons, Herman, Robert and Marion. They made Russell their home and Herman worked in the grocery business for more than 50 years.

He was strong in his faith and was a longtime member of St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell. He was very active in church and was a 3rd degree member in the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, working, baseball and playing cards. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and many grandchildren. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a hard worker, as well as loving father, grandfather and friend.

Surviving family include his two sons, Herman F. Hammerschmidt and wife Rosalee of Russell and Marion L. Hammerschmidt, Sr., and wife Rose of Great Bend; five grandchildren, Shelby, Jacquelyn, Stephen, Marion Jr. and Christopher; six great-grandchildren, Mariah, Kaitlyn, Miranda, Koal, Marion III and Alexandria. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Teckla on Aug. 2, 2010, and their son Robert D. Hammerschmidt; brothers Tura, Wendelin, Ott, Lawrence and Anslem Hammerschmidt and sisters Mary Dreiling, Caroline Schrant and Minnie Windholz.

A Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church of Russell with Father Charles Steier officiating. Interment will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Russell. A Vigil will be held Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. A memorial has been established with St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
