Joy Amalie Deighton 1918 - 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Joy Amalie Deighton passed away on Feb. 10 at age 92. She was born in Rosetown, Saskatoon, Canada on Aug. 5, 1918, to Joseph and Josephine Suchy, who moved from Kansas to homestead in Canada in the early 1900s. While in Canada, Joy and five sisters were born before the family returned to Kansas.

Joy graduated from Great Bend High School in 1936 with honors. While at Great Bend High, Joy was an active member of the school symphony band, marching band, and drama club.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her five sisters, and her husband of 52 years, Verne W. Deighton, who passed in 1988. Verne and Joy moved to Colorado Springs in 1950. They were members of St. Paul’s Catholic Church where Joy was a charter member of the St Paul’s choir and a member of the Altar Society. She also sang with the Sweet Adeline’s for a number of years.

She is survived by twin sons Darryl and Duane Deighton of Colorado Springs, Colo., and daughter Mardee Kaus of Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren, Kenneth Minnick, James Minnick II, David Deighton, John Deighton, Darryl Deighton Jr., Samuel Deighton, Belinda Deighton Abney, Ashley McCown and Colin McCown; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Interment will be at Memorial Gardens in Colorado Springs on Wednesday. Viewing is at 9 a.m. and the burial service will follow at 10 a.m.
