HOISINGTON — M. "Joyce" Steiner died Jan. 11 at McCrite Plaza Retirement Community, Topeka. She was born in Clarinda, Iowa, the daughter of Harry Isaac and Thelma (Kite) Brooks. She married James John Steiner May 7, 1976, at Hoisington. He died June 26, 1991. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone as a switchboard operator. She was a Topeka resident since 2009, coming from Hoisington.

Mrs. Steiner was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Altar Society and V.F.W. Auxiliary, all of Hoisington. She was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Survivors include one son, Thomas R. Shelby and wife Becky of Glendale, Ariz.; one daughter, Starrlyt Rodgers and husband Paul of Topeka; five grandchildren, Daren Rodgers of Colby, Bret Rodgers and wife Kathleen of Olathe, Aaron Shelby and wife Christina, Erica Shelby and Brandon Shelby, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; and six great-grandchildren, Lauren Rodgers, Noah Rodgers and Ava Rodgers, all of Colby, Michelle Rodgers, Olathe, Daniel Shelby, and an expected great-grandchild in September, both of Phoenix. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry Brooks and Kenneth Brooks, and by one sister, Betty Smith.

Private family graveside service will be at St. John Church Cemetery, Hoisington, with Father Dermot Tighe officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Memorial donations are suggested to McCrite Plaza Retirement Center or Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church or Kansas Dialysis Service of Topeka, in care of the funeral home.
