GREAT BEND — Mark A. Helm, age 64 years, of Great Bend, Kan., passed away on Sunday evening, July 15, 2018 at Great Bend Regional Hospital in Great Bend after a sudden illness.
Mark was born on Oct. 14, 1953, at Hays, Kan. to Carl F. and Melba J. (Meyers) Helm. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years. Mark was united in marriage to his wife Sheila on June 2, 1990 at Great Bend. A Great Bend resident for the majority of his life, he worked for Sunflower Electric Power Corporation and predecessor companies for over 30 years in various positions prior to his retirement four years ago as Executive Manager of Transmission.
Mark is survived by his wife, Sheila Helm of Great Bend, Kan.; one son, Joshua (and his wife, Stacia) Helm of Wichita, Kan.; two daughters, Rachel (and her husband, Jordan) Shorter of Solomon, Kan. and Sara (and her husband, Brian) Potter of Somersworth, N.H.; eight grandchildren, Tayci Helm, Joshua (and his wife, Jessica) Helm, Jonathan Helm, Tanner Helm, Isabelle Shorter, Hannah Shorter, Jaxon Potter and Brooks Potter; two great-grandchildren, Maryha Helm and Maddalynn Helm; one brother, Carl (and his wife, Connie) Helm of Great Bend, Kan. and one step-brother, Ralph (and his wife, Diana) Sunley of Great Bend, Kan.; two sisters, Claudia Arnold of Salina, Kan. and Anne (and her husband, Brent) Butler of Warrensburg, Mo. Mark was preceded in death by his parents; a stepfather Marion Sunley; a daughter Terra Helm; and a sister Lila Girton.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2018 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kan. with Pastor Leroy Keith officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery north of Great Bend, Kan. The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Grandchildren’s Education Fund or Golden Belt Humane Society in Great Bend, Kan.
