STERLING — Richard “Dick” Mead, 83, died Nov. 26 at Wesley Medical Center. Born May 23, 1929 in Sterling, he was the son of Rollin and Essie Smith Mead. In 1947, he graduated from Sterling High School. On Oct. 30, 1955, he married Margaret “Beth” Terrill in Sterling, Colo. She died on March 31, 2012. A resident of Wichita since 2009, formerly of Sterling, he was retired as president and superintendent for Sterling Drilling Company.
Mr. Mead was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Korean War. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Rotary Club and was past president of the American Legion, all in Sterling.
Survivors include three sons, Tom and Gayla Mead of Wichita, Randy and Sherrie Mead of Dubois, Idaho and Chuck and Elizabeth Mead of Peabody; a daughter, Dixie Mead of Billings, Mont.; a sister, Betty Taylor; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Roy and Harry Mead.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Sterling United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marvin Ewertt officiating. Burial will be at the Sterling Community Cemetery with military honors by the United States Navy. Friends may visit, with family present, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at Birzer Funeral Home in Sterling. Memorials are suggested to the Dick Mead Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.
