Cinco de Mayo 2023
Next week, Great Bend celebrates Hispanic culture
Cinco de mayo

The annual Cinco De Mayo Festival is set to take place in downtown Jack Kilby Square on Saturday, May 6, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Its purpose is to demonstrate the importance and vitality of the Hispanic culture to all – and to celebrate that culture with food, music and other entertainment.

It all starts with a Main Street parade at 11 a.m.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Great Bend’s festival. It promises lots of exciting activities and attractions for the whole family, according to Great Bend Chamber of Commerce CEO/President Megan Barfield.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to come together and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of our community. We hope to see you all there!”

There will be live music from Los Traficantes Del Norte, a popular band known for its energetic performances. Local food vendors will also be on hand, serving up delicious, authentic Mexican cuisine. In addition to the music and food, there will be plenty of entertainment to keep everyone engaged throughout the day – from dancing to games and other activities.

The sponsors have again selected a Cinco de Mayo king, queen and princess, and they will be featured in the parade. According to the Cinco de Mayo-Great Bend, Kansas Facebook page, Christian Chacon-Renteria has been chosen as the king, Vanessa Vasquez will be the queen and Ana Maria Nava, runner-up to the queen, will be the princess. Selling tickets was a criterion for the votes. Other candidates were Lydia War, Xitlali Huitron, Jammelly Delgadillo, Lindsay Rodriguez, Fernanda Ayala and Faith Sexton.

The Chamber will have its own booth, serving up cotton candy and hosting a giveaway for a chance to win gift baskets with items from local businesses, as well as pinatas for the kids to enjoy.

This event is free and open to the public, so mark your calendars for May 6th, and come join the fun.
