Barton baseball stays steady at No. 18

There was a new number one this week in the NJCAA men’s baseball poll. In fact, it was a tight battle among the top four teams in the country in the latest NJCAA Top 20 poll released Tuesday.
But while the top of the poll shuffled, the Barton Cougars remained ranked No.
It is the second straight week Barton has been 18th and the sixth straight poll the Cougars has been ranked in. That is all the polls with the exception of the preseason poll.
Barton went 3-1 this past week, winning its fifth straight Jayhawk West series by that 3-1 count to take a 2-game lead the rest of the West. Barton is now 30-8 overall and 15-5 in the West.
Santa Fe (Fla) took over the top spot from Walter State (Tenn). The Senators had been No. 1 for two weeks before losing a game last week.
Ironically, Walters State received the most first place votes – more than half in fact. The Senators had six first place votes to just two for Saints, but Santa Fe tallied 183 points to 180 for Walters State.
Chipola (Fla) and State College of Florida each picked up one first place vote and are third and fourth with 174 and 173 points. That gives Region 8 three of the top four teams in the nation.
It is a ways back to a tie for No. 5 with McLennan (Texas) and Wabash Valley (Ill) at 146 points.
Cowley, leading the Jayhawk East with a 21-3 mark and 28-8 overall, is the highest ranked Jayhawk team. The Tigers are up two spots to No. 12. Fort Scott, 33-7, is down to No. 19 after splitting games with KCK last week.
Barton will try to keep its spot at the top of the West this weekend with a 4-game series against one of the teams right behind them in the standings. Colby, 12-8 and 22-17, is sitting tied for third with Cloud County. The series will start Thursday at Barton and conclude Saturday in Colby.
