HUTCHINSON – The Barton men’s track and field team left no doubt as to who was the top team in Region VI.
With four teams ranked in the Top 10 in the NJCAA, the Cougars showed they were the dominate team in the region.
Barton, ranked No. 2 in the nation, rolled to a Region VI title, scoring 213 points for the win. That was well ahead of second place Cloud County, ranked No. 3, at 160. Butler was more than 100 points behind Barton in third with 101.
Barton won eight events and finished second in eight more. Six different Barton athletes won individual events with the Cougars winning two more relays.
Christian Lyon won the 200m and took second in the 100m in the sprints. Lyon ran a 20.49 to win the 200m and a 10.27 for silver in the 100m. Samson Colbrooke was right behind him in both races, taking second in the 200m in 20.63 and third in the 100m in 10.33. Terrance Ware was fourth in the 100m and Dartez Hamlin fourth in the 200m.
Nathan Hood took second in the 800m with a time of 1:54.94 and Hilton McClain was third in the 400m in 48.17.
The Cougars swept the hurdles races. Stephon Torrence won the 110m in 14.23 and Kenroy Williams won the 400m hurdles in 50.48. Michale Reyes was second in the 400m in 52.10 and Marquise Hill fourth at 53.09.
In the field, Barton won two of the four throwing events. Sanjae Lawrence lead a 1-2 finish in the shot put, winning with a distance of 59-8.5. Kevin Nedrick was second at 53-10.5.
Enrique Martinez took the hammer throw with a toss of 184-2 and Graham Sokol was third at 177-8. Lawrence, like Lyon in the sprints, just missed a double in the throws, taking second in the discus at 168-8. Nedrick was third at 159-1.
Barton’s Travis Hugg led Barton to a sweep in the long jump. Hugg won with a leap just shy of 25-feet, going 24-11.75. Alvin McCray was second at 24-9.75 and Bradley Fleurinord third at 24-6.5.
Willie Rodgers took second in the high jump with a leap of 6-8. McCray led a trio of Barton jumpers placing in the triple jump, taking fifth at 48-1.75.
In the relay events, Barton won the 4x100, the 4x400m and took second in the 4x800m.
Lyon, Ware, Colbrooke and Hamlin combined to win the 4x100m in 39.99. Brandon Felix, Hugg, Torrence, and McCray won the 4x400m with a time of 3:!0.67.
Tallan James, Adriano Gumbs, Hood and Hill were second in the 4x800m with a time of 7:46.7.
The Cougars will be off until the NJCAA Championships. Those will take place May 17-19 in El Dorado.
