Barton women split games in Blue Dragon Classic

Barton led wire-to-wire on the way to a 70-45 win over Pratt.

HUTCHINSON – The level of competition the Barton women’s basketball team was to see at the Blue Dragon Holiday Classic in Hutchinson was definitely on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Friday, there was a winless Ellsworth team that had only six players. Saturday was an Iowa Western squad that was a pre-season Top 25 squad.

The results were also quite opposite. Barton rolled to a 74-point win over Ellsworth Friday, winning 101-27. But Saturday things didn’t go as smoothly as Iowa Western ended Barton’s 4-game winning streak with a 84-68 win over the Cougars.

Barton is now 10-3 overall as it closes the book on non-conference play. The Cougars will be back in Jayhawk play where they are 4-1 on the season Saturday when Butler visits the Barton Gym.

Saturday, an Iowa Western team that had struggled to hit shots from the outside was on fire. After hitting just 5-of-19 3-pointers the previous night against host Hutchinson and just a 28 percent 3-point shooting team on the season, the Reivers knocked down 8-of-14 in the opening half.

That propelled the Reivers to a 19-point halftime lead on the way to the win. Iowa Western finished 12-of-21 from behind the arc for the game.

An 8-0 run by Iowa Western in the first quarter put the Reivers in control at 20-12. Iowa Western led 22-16 after one period.

From there, the Cougars would be playing catchup. The Iowa Western lead reached double figures at 31-21 midway through the second period. The Reivers continued to extend that lead, reaching 16 points at 42-26 late in the half.

By half, the lead was a nearly insurmountable 19 points at 49-30.

Barton did what it needed early in the third period getting the lead down to 13 on a pair of occasions. When Conner Keith found D’Shonda Hunt in the lane and Barton trimmed it to 53-42 midway through the period. But seven straight by the Reivers pushed it back out to 60-42.

Back-to-back treys from Keith and Richelle Turney made it 60-48 after three and gave the Cougars some hope.

The Cougars got the lead to 10 in the final period and hung around early but were never able to get the margin into single digits.

Jaylin Stapleton led Barton with 13 points in the loss with Turney adding 10.

Friday’s game wasn’t much of a contest from the opening tip. Barton scored the game’s first nine points and led 22-7 after one quarter against the winless Panthers.

That would prove to be one of the closest quarters. The next 10 minutes of play saw Barton hold Ellsworth scoreless during a 27-0 quarter to take a 49-7 halftime lead.

The run would reach 35-0 over three quarters before the Panthers scored early in the third period. That third period would be the only one in which Ellsworth reached double figures, scoring 14 of its 27 points in that quarter.

All 14 Cougars would play double digit minutes and put points on the scoreboard.

Leading the way was Mallory Miller, who scored 15 on 5-of-7 shooting on 3-pointers – all coming in the first half. Conner Keith scored 11 off the Barton bench thanks in large part to a 3-of-3 effort behind the 3-point arc. Irene Chukwudi added 10.

Now its back to conference play as the Cougars host Butler Saturday. Butler is off to a 13-1 start with its only loss at No. 6 Hutchinson. The Grizzlies are ranked No. 10 in the nation. Tip is set for 5:30 pm.
