COFFEYVILLE – It will happen. The Barton women’s basketball team will win a game on the road.
The Cougars will not go 0-13 in Jayhawk Conference road games. It just hasn’t happened yet.
Barton fell to 0-5 on the road with a 76-51 loss to Coffeyville Wednesday night at Nellis Hall deep in Southeast Kansas.
The loss dropped Barton to 7-5 in the Jayhawk Conference and 10-6 overall. Coffeyville is also 7-5 in the Jayhawk and 9-7 overall.
The two are in a group of four bunched up with that same 7-5 mark. Also 7-5 in the Jayhawk is Butler and Garden City. That is good for a tie for sixth.
Cowley, Seward and Hutchinson are tied at 10-2 to lead the conference. Hutchinson won at Independence 56-53 Wednesday to drop the Pirates to 9-3 and out of a tie for the lead.
A big second quarter by Coffeyville proved to be the difference in the game.
Neither team could muster much offense in the opening stages of the contest. The two teams traded the lead before a 9-0 run gave the Red Ravens a 14-6 lead with 3:05 left in the opening quarter.
Natasha Dolinksy ended that run with a deep 2-point jumper and righted the ship for the Cougars. Barton scored seven straight to make it 14-13 before T’era Fullove hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Coffeyville a 17-13 lead after one.
The Red Ravens established control right out of the blocks in the second period. Coffeyville scored the first four points to take a 21-13 lead, prompting Barton Coach Alan Clark to spend a time out with 8:11 left in the half.
Unfortunately for Barton, the timeout didn’t slow the Red Ravens. The lead got as high as high as 28-13 as the Cougars went more than five minutes to start the second quarter without a point.
Micaela Jellison finally ended a 14-0 Coffeyville run but by then the Cougars had a huge hole to dig out of.
That hole got bigger.
The Red Raven scored the game’s next 13 points as the lead grew to 41-15 before Barton finally scored at the end of the period on a Fatou Ndao bucket. The Cougars were outscored 24-4 in the second 10 minutes of play.
Barton never mounted a serious challenge in the second half.
Barton was led by Juliana Chagas with 10 points – the only Cougar in double figures.
Lucy Burke did a chunk of the damage for Coffeyville. The sophomore from Australia hit seven 3-pointers on her way to 23 points. As a team the Red Ravens were 9-of-21 on 3s.
Barton is back home Saturday to battle with Neosho County. The Panthers (3-9, 6-9) lost 83-48 to Butler Wednesday. Tip at the Barton Gym will be 5:30 p.m.
