WICHITA -- Daniela Sanz con
tinues to impress and so do the Barton Community College women's tennis team.
After dropping its opening match of the season, Barton has put together back-to-back 8-1 wins. The latest of those was an 8-1 win over Friends University Wednesday at the Genisis West Club in Wichita.
"Although the overall team score was lopsided we really didn’t play our best tennis," Coach Lyle Stickney said of his women's team.
Leading the way has been Sanz, a freshman for the Cougars. She won both No. 1 singles and, along with Barbara Codognotto, earned a win at No. 1 doubles.
"We are still waiting for Daniela to be tested," Coach Stickney said. "She coasted to another easy win today and has dropped just three games in four matches. Daniela and Barbara also reamained unbeaten."
Sanz had an easy day in singles, defeating Meredith Haney, 6-0, 6-0. Codognotto did likewise at No. 2 singles over Alexis Johnson. The duo won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles over Haney and Blakley, 8-1.
Claflin's Karli Beck won a tight battle with Torye Lembke at No. 3 singles, prevailing by a 7-5, 7-5 score.
“Karli continues to win her matches at No. 3, but I’m looking forward to seeing her compete the way she practices, with much more confidence," Coach Stickney said.
Beck and Kelly Brauer had little trouble winning No. 2 doubles. The tandem beat Lembke and Johnson 8-2. Brauer suffered the lone loss of the day at No. 4 singles by a 6-2, 6-4 margin to Blakley.
The Great Bend pair of Stephanie Langer and Rebecca Brining won at No. 3 doubles. The two defeated Victoria Nissley and Alexandria Shamburger, 8-3.
Langer defeated Nissley at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-4 while Brining won No. 6, 8-1, over Shamburger.
It was more than a month between the opening two matches in January and the next date Wednesday but things pick up quickly now. The Cougars are back on the court Saturday when they travel to Hillsboro for a battle with Tabor College.
