SALINA — It took two overtime periods, but the Barton Community College men’s basketball team defeated Brown Mackie on Saturday afternoon, largely due to 42 points from Darius Gibson.
Barton led by six points heading into halftime, 45-39, with four ties and eight lead changes.
With 46 seconds remaining in regulation, Gibson tied the game at 87 for Barton with a free throw.
Both teams had a chance to take the lead with Curtis Moore missing a jumper for the Lions and DJ Johnson missing a jumper for Barton.
With 51 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, Moore dropped in a bucket to tie things at 98.
Gibson missed a jumper with 15 seconds remaining, and Brown Mackie’s Jason Jordan missed a 3-pointer with eight seconds left.
Barton’s Tyler Corley missed a 3-pointer as time ran out, leading to the second overtime period.
Gibson scored seven of Barton’s 10 points in the final period, including the free throws that helped seal the win for the Cougars. He went 13 of 17 from the floor (76.7 percent) and 16-for-20 from the line (80 percent).
Corley added 20 points, Isaac Williams finished with 14 and Johnson scored 12.
WOMEN
Cowley County 60, Barton 59
ARKANSAS CITY — A free-throw in the final second of the game was all that kept the Barton women’s basketball team from forcing Cowley County into overtime on Saturday evening.
Barton trailed 29-27 at halftime, and outscored the Lady Tigers 32-31 in the second half to keep it close throughout.
Cheyenne Hedrington led the Lady Cougars with 14 points, going 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.
Ashton Bruner had 13 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double.
Mariana Lambert added 13 points for Barton.
The Lady Cougars, who are 12-4 overall, will host Pratt on Saturday, Jan. 11, starting at 6 p.m. The men’s game follows at 7:30.
