Things started to get out of hand in the final seven minutes of the first half, and Barton Community College’s women’s basketball team couldn’t keep up with Hutchinson on Wednesday night.
The Lady Blue Dragons earned a 78-52 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division win at Kirkman Activity Center.
“It was another inconsistent performance against a really good team,” Barton head coach Carter Kruger said. “When you are inconsistent against really good teams, they make you pay.”
The Lady Cougars hung with Hutch for the first 13 minutes, but with the score tied at 17 and 7:02 remaining in the opening half, the Lady Blue Dragons started to pull away.
Hutchinson led 38-25 at halftime, and continued to pull away in the second half.
Barton had spurts on offense, but couldn’t manage a comeback. The Lady Cougars shot 16 of 56 from the floor for 28.6 percent.
“Offensively, we need to execute better,” Kruger said. “At the end of the day, it comes down to some players have to handle certain situations and make good decisions. For too much of that game, when we were in that tough situation, we didn’t make good decisions.”
The Lady Cougars got mobbed in the middle by Hutchinson’s size.
“When we got it in the paint, we were not able to make them pay,” Kruger said. “They were able to beat us physically, and we kind of backed down.”
Barton was outrebounded 57-27. It had 18 points in the paint, compared to 40 points for Hutch.
Mariana Lambert led the Lady Cougars with 15 points. She went 4-for-6 from the 3-point range.
“Her shooting the ball was kind of the bright spot, but in terms of what she can do, she’s just reaching the point of she’s starting to contribute,” Kruger said. “She can give us more, and she will.”
Barton travels to Garden City on Saturday, starting at 5:30 p.m.
