The Barton Community College women’s basketball team had their rally come up short on Wednesday night.
The Lady Cougars fell 78-72 against Seward County at Kirkman Activity Center in a Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division game.
“I thought we played hard, but we did not play well at all,” Barton head coach Carter Kruger said. “We had a couple kids who came in and tried to make some things happen. But individually, and as a group, we did not play very well.”
Barton kept pace with Seward throughout most of the first half, but the Lady Saints pulled away in the final five minutes.
Seward went on a run and Barton’s offense went cold to put the Lady Cougars behind 39-27 at halftime.
“In that first half, we just had a complete meltdown,” Kruger said. “We did not execute. We did not make good decisions, and that’s the name of the game. You can’t score if you’re not making good decisions with the basketball.”
Things didn’t improve in the second half.
Barton found itself down 20 points heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.
Cheyenne Hedrington, who blew up for 32 points for Barton, scored eight consecutive points to get the Lady Cougars started on a comeback.
“She battles, and her team puts her in a lot of good situations,” Kruger said. “She had a lot of opportunities to score, but the good thing about it was she took advantage of those opportunities. She stepped up toward the end.”
Brandy Winbush backed that up with a 3-pointer, and Ashton Bruner crashed to the hoop and made two free throws to close the gap to 66-61 with 4:45 remaining.
That would be as close as Barton would get. Seward regained its footing and held off the Barton attack.
Bruner finished with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Collectively, the Lady Cougars didn’t shoot well from the floor, going 22-for-69 (31.9 percent).
Barton travels to Colby on Sunday. The women’s game starts at 2 p.m.
