SALINA — The Barton Community College women’s basketball team had to overcome something it hadn’t faced this season on Saturday afternoon at the Brown Mackie Classic — a halftime deficit.
The Lady Cougars had been living the high life through their first four games of the season, but found themselves trailing 33-27 at intermission against the Kansas Wesleyan JV.
Barton responded with 46 points in the second half to win 73-56.
“It’s the first time all season we’ve been down at halftime,” Barton head coach Carter Kruger said. “We just didn’t execute offensively in the first half. On defense, we did a lot of things that we had talked about not doing, like helping off shooters.
“We played much better on defense in the second half. We started to get into a rhythm offensively, and things just spiralled for us.”
The Lady Cougars improve to 5-0 on the season with the win.
Ashton Bruner exploded for 25 points, shooting 10-for-11 from the field. She also had a team-leading nine rebounds.
“She had a nice game,” Kruger said. “She got out to a rough start. She made some hurried decisions in the first half, getting some turnovers, but she really played well in the second half. She got out and made some plays in transition.”
Brandy Winbush came off the bench to score 11 points, the only other Lady Cougars player in double figures. Winbush was 3-for-6 from 3-point range.

Barton cruised to a 22-point lead by halftime on their way to a 27-point win to open the Brown Mackie Classic.
Even with the lead, Kruger said he wasn’t happy with how his team played with the massive lead.
“The second half was sloppy,” Kruger said. “We didn’t quite compete the way we wanted to. Defensively, we had some breakdowns that kept us from really adding to our lead in the second half.”
Bruner led Barton scorers with 16 points.
Cheyenne Hedrington was 7-for-10 from the field for the Lady Cougars, recording 15 points and a team-leading eight rebounds.
Phikala Anthony had 14 points, going 5 of 5 from the free-throw line, and Winbush added 12 points for Barton.
