ARKANSAS CITY — After dropping its first two games of the season to ranked opponents, the Barton Community College women's soccer team earned their first win by shutting out Cowley College 2-0 on Thursday night. Barton improved to 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in Jayhawk Conference play. Cowley drops to 1-2, 0-2.
The Lady Cougars will play their first game of the season at home on Sunday as the Coffeyville comes to the Cougar Soccer Complex for a 1 p.m. contest.
Against Cowley, freshman Candice Bieler helped get Barton on the scoreboard at the 15-minute mark in the first half with a right corner cross to sophomore Bianca Barron. Barron, who was a first team all-conference and all-region player last season, took Bieler's pass to beat the Cowley goalkeeper to score her first goal of the season and give the Cougars the 1-0 halftime advantage.
Mariana Poveda, one of five returning sophomores to have earned postseason honors last season, helped the Cougars put the game away with 21 minutes remaining on a deep forward pass to Barron. Barron, who scored 31 goals during her first season, broke behind the defense on the pass to seal the Cougars' 2-0 victory.
