It didn’t take long for the Barton Community College women’s basketball team to put up a double-digit lead against the Tabor junior varsity on Tuesday night at Kirkman Activity Center.
The Lady Cougars cruised to a 95-68 win to improve to 8-1 on the season.
“We got up by 39 with five minutes left,” Barton head coach Carter Kruger said. “By then, we had all of our starters out, and they ended up cutting it to 27.
“I thought we did a good job of not really settling because their defense was pretty much giving us whatever we wanted. We did a good job not settling for lazy jump shots. I really liked that.”
That’s not to say the entire game was smooth sailing.
“Defensively, we just fouled too much,” Kruger said. “These players have to learn that every game isn’t going to be called the same way, and we’ve just got to be mature enough to adjust and make good plays.”
Barton had 24 personal fouls, five more than Tabor.
Freshman forward Cheyenne Hedrington exploded for 25 points and 11 rebounds, going 11-for-13 from the field (85 percent).
“She really does well against kids who aren’t as big as her,” Kruger said of Hedrington. “She gets really active on the glass regardless of that. She had a nice game tonight, and she’s been playing very well for us.”
Also in double figures was Ashton Bruner, who finished with 17 points and six assists.
Mariana Lambert scored 11 points.
Barton hosts Neosho County on Friday night at 5:30 in the Best Western Angus Inn/Cougar Booster Club Thanksgiving Basketball Classic.
“It was good to knock some of that rust off after a 10-day hiatus,” Kruger said, “especially going into the tournament this weekend.”
