No. 5 Hutchinson downs Barton women, 74-64

HUTCHINSON – No. 5 ranked Hutchinson Community College outscored Barton Community College 26-18 in the fourth quarter for a 74-64 Jayhawk Conference basketball victory over the Cougars.

The Cougars connected on an opponent season high 53.7% against Hutchinson. The Blue Dragons countering with 13-of-38 3-pointers and scored 27 points off 22 Barton turnovers.

The Dragons (17-0, 11-0 Jayhawk) placed five players in double figures -- Kiki Smith (17), Bree Hornya (13), Hailey Jackson (12), Journey Armstead (12) and Muggeridge (10). Armstead recorded back-to-back steals that Jackson and Armstead converted for a 66-57 lead.

Barton (12-5, 7-4 Jayhawk) was paced by Quezia Bertoni with 17 points with four assists. Vivian Onugha led the inside game with 16 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Vera Ojenuwa, fouling out with 5:21 left with the Cougars down two, contributed 12 points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes of court time.

Second behind Bertoni in the league assist leaders, Grace John distributed a game high seven assists with seven points. Darby Smith came off the bench draining a career high 2-of-2 from long distance with six points. Tatum Boettjer converted 2-of-6 from long distance.

Boettjer's triple and Onugha's 3-point play sparked the Cougars to a 6-point lead. Smith's first trey helped the Cougars to an 8-point lead with 5:41 remaining. Bertoni's triple gave Barton a 7-point lead. The Dragons drilled a trio of 3-pointers for an 18-16 lead.

Onugha's two buckets drew Barton within one in the second period. But turnovers hurt the Cougars as Hutchinson pushed the gap to seven.

Barton scored the final four points to close within 32-28 holding Hutchinson to 37.5%.

Smith's second triple tied the score at 38. Hutchinson drained its 10th three-pointer to regain the lead 48-46 after three periods. Boettjer's final 3-pointer closed the gap to two points with 4:59 remaining.

Hutchinson's 13th 3-pointer regained the momentum. Two Barton turnovers leading to transition layups sealed the Blue Dragon victory for a 9-point advantage.

NOTES Teams have split last eight meetings. Hutchinson has won the last three meetings at the Sports Arena. Hutchinson leads the series 24-23 in Hutchinson. Barton leads the overall series 57-45.

The Barton Cougar softball team drilled five homers to spark a doubleheader sweep over Garden City 12-1 and 9-6 Sunday at Cougar Field. The Cougars (25-9, 19-3 Jayhawk) drop Garden City to 19-15, 11-9 Jayhawk. The Cougars travel to Dodge City Wednesday. Karter Alvord's grand slam ended game one 12-1 after Chloe Enslinger and Elina Bartlett homered earlier. Bartlett's 3-run shot in game two set the stage for a 9-6 victory for the Cougars' 14th straight win over Garden City. Alvord and Chloe Enslinger led the squad's 20 hits with 4-of-7 performances each, Alvord's 9th home run clinching game one as Enslinger's two-run shot in the opener's third frame posted her 14th home run of the year putting Barton up 3-0. Peyton McCormick finished 3-of-6 with three RBI, connecting on her 9th of the year on a solo fence clearer in the fourth inning of the nightcap for a 5-2 lead. Bartlett belted two home runs, opening with a 2-of-3 performance with a pair of RBI's including a fifth inning dinger before her 3-run blast in game two's first frame recorded her 6th of the year. Meleia Ingram (13-4) struck out nine batters, yielding a homer to Garden City's Alyssa Santana. Brooklynn Angielski (10-4) yielded 10 hits and struck out three batters. Reliever Alicia Goseland pitched two frames, yielding a trio of seventh-inning runs. COUGARS 12, GARDEN CITY 1 (G1) — Laney Wood's one-out single in the third would score on McCormick's reach on error, with Enslinger's two-run long ball growing the lead to 3-0. The Cougars scored four fifth-inning runs. Aly Lawrence tripled and scored on McCormick's sac fly. Bartlett's home run was followed by Ava Fink's 2-run single for a 7-1 lead. Garden City committed two errors with Lawrence and Enslinger reaching base. Bartlett's sac fly to left plated one. Thatcher's hit-by pitch set the table for Alvord's grand slam homer. COUGARS 9, GARDEN CITY 6 (G2) — Wood's leadoff walk scored on McCormick's first of two hits in the nightcap. Bartlett extending her consecutive game hit streak to 10 straight by connecting on a no-doubt, three-run blast for her second yard exiter of the twinbill. Garden City connected on five hits in the fourth inning to cut the deficit in half, three hits coming with two outs including Santana's 2-RBI single. McCormick's 9th long ball of the year got one of the runs back in the home half with Garden City answering in the top of the fifth on a one-out hit and stolen base scoring on a double. The Cougars fired back with a 4-run fifth inning. Fink's ground out pushed one across the dish with two more heading home on Wood's 8th double. A fielding error would close out the four-run frame. Garden City scored a trio of seventh-inning runs, Maria Avendan Fori's hit an RBI triple followed by Maysen Kurene-Iwikau's 8th homer.
