McPherson wins KCAC baseball title

The McPherson Bulldogs capture the 2023 KCAC baseball championship.

MCPHERSON 6, KANSAS WESLEYAN 5 (G9) —McPherson's Andres Artola ignited a wild celebration with a game-winning homer as the Bulldogs won the KCAC baseball championship over the regular-season champion.

McPherson (36-14) advances to an NAIA regional May 15-17. Kansas Wesleyan finishes with a 42-13 record.

McPherson trailed 5-2 before rallying for three runs in its final two at-bats. Drake Miller (6-1) worked two innings for the victory.

Hunter Robinson scored on Caleb Feuerstak's eighth-inning double. Gage Ninness and J.T. Edmunds delivered RBI ninth-inning singles off reliever Dan Ramirez. Antonio Fernandez drilled a 2-run first-inning homer.

Kansas Wesleyan's William Dryburgh, Dustin Sipe, H Brown, Zack Beatty and Zach Olson delivered RBIs for the Coyotes.

KANSAS WESLEYAN 8, OKLAHOMA WESLEYAN 2 (G9) — KCAC regular-season champion Kansas Wesleyan fought back to the championship against McPherson with a 6-run ninth inning to break a 2-2 tie.

Kendall Foster hit a 2-run double and William Dryburgh and Dustin Sipe delivered RBI singles in a 6-run ninth.

KANSAS WESLEYAN 14, OTTAWA 11 (G8) — The Coyotes played long ball with six homers. Dryburgh and Sipe each drove out two homers and Kevin Esquillin-Cruz and Zach Olson homered. Dryburgh drove home four runs. Olson, Esquillin-Cruz, Sipe and Garrett Gable drove in three runs.

MCPHERSON 9, OKLAHOMA WESLEYAN 2 (G7)  McPherson's Andres Artola drove home three runs and Kevinn Castillo drove in two runs as the Bulldogs advanced to Saturday's 11 a.m. championship game. Caleb Feuerstake homered for the second consecutive game.

McPherson pitcher Alex Escobar (6-4) worked 81/3 innings.

OTTAWA 11, FRIENDS 10 (G6) — Friends nearly rallied from an 11-0 deficit with 10 consecutive runs in the final three innings. Ottawa's Lukas Rich drove in three runs and Cole Broughton and Jonah Weisner each drove in two runs. Ottawa survived when Friends' Pablo Oden hit into a ninth-inning double play and Niquan Benjamin made the final out.

Friends' Devon Lujan and Buster Hardman each drove home three runs.

KANSAS WESLEYAN 8, TABOR 6 (G5) — Kansas Wesleyan's Haydn Brown and Kevin Esquillin Cruz each drove home two runs.

MCPHERSON 6, FRIENDS 5, 10 innings (G4) — McPherson's Caleb Feuerstake scored on an 10th-inning error for the game-winning run. Feuerstake hit an eighth-inning homer. Dawson Walters hit a tying RBI single in the ninth inning. 

OKLAHOMA WESLEYAN 10, KANSAS WESLEYAN 5 (G3) — Oklahoma Wesleyan upset the KCAC champion. Jesus Rojas ripped a 3-run homer and Jordyn Smith hit a 2-run homer. Chavez drove in two runs.

FRIENDS 10, TABOR 4 (G2) — Friends' Zeke Hanson and Dakota Hardy each drove in three runs. Devon Lujan hit a 2-run homer.

OKLAHOMA WESLEYAN 5, OTTAWA 2 (G1) — Oklahoma Wesleyan pitcher Michael Mendoza (11-4) struck out five batters. Josh Logan 2-run single scored Jordyn Smith and Nate Vigil. Noah Adams hit a 2-run double to score Josh Logan and Jesus Rojas. Tommy Davis scored on a Nicholas Chavez double.
