It was a big-time rebound. Following back-to-back losses for the first time this season, the Barton women’s soccer team responded in a big way.
The Cougars put up their highest point total of the season with a 9-0 blanking of Pratt Saturday on the road. In the process, Barton freshman Maddison Schofield scored five goals in the Jayhawk West win.
The win moved Barton to 3-2 in the West and 4-4-1 overall. Pratt remained winless at 0-6 and 0-10. Barton will have a big match Wednesday when it travels to Garden City for what could amount to a battle for a second place finish in the West.
Schofield scored four straight goals at one point and added an assist in the win.
The five goals put her in a tie for fifth at Barton for most goals scored in a game. Yesenia Garcia holds that record when she recorded seven goals back in 2007 at Cloud County. Shala Giardini scored six goals on three different occasion in the 2009 season.
Barton scored twice in just a little more than five minutes to start the game. Schofield recorded an assist on the first goal of the game when she hooked up with Hannah Knaak just 1:46 into the contest. Those two would team for three of the Cougars goals. Megan Martinez made it 2-0 5:21 into the match on an assist from Adriana Reyes.
Then Schofield took over. She ended the first half with a pair of goals – the first on an assist from Knaak and the second unassisted.
Schofield started the second half with two more goals on assists from Brooke Russell and Amber Miller.
Miller made it 7-0 on an assist from Martinez and Knaak scored her second goal of the game to make it 8-0. The scoring wrapped up with Schofield’s fifth goal on another assist from Knaak with still 20 minutes to play in the contest.
The easy win sets up a big game Wednesday in Garden City. The battle will be the first of two between the two teams in a six day span. The two teams will play in Great Bend Monday.
