The back-and-forth Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division game came undone in the final five minutes for the Barton Cougars.
After trading leads four times in the first half, Barton took hold of the game, but Hutchinson gained the advantage with five minutes remaining in the second half on its way to a 98-85 win on Wednesday night at Kirkman Activity Center.
The lead changed four times and the game was tied six times — and that was just the first half of the Black-Out game for Barton.
Thanks to trio of 3-pointers from Deriece Parks, Barton held a 40-35 lead at halftime.
Barton remained in the lead throughout most of the second half, but with 5:28 remaining in the game, momentum shifted.
The Blue Dragons tied things up at 70 on a 3-pointer from Darrick Wood.
That was the spark that ignited a 14-0 run, leaving the Cougars playing catchup for the rest of the game.
Hutchinson made 20 of 26 second-half free throws, keeping Barton at arm’s length. Hutchinson scored 63 second-half points off 19 of 37 shooting from the field and 5 of 7 on 3-pointers. The Dragons scored 20 second-chance points.
Darius Gibson led Barton with 23 points. The Cougars were outscored 63-45 in the second half.
Parks finished 4-for-10 from the 3-point line, scoring 18 points for the Cougars. Isaac Williams added 11 points, and Tyler Corley scored 10.
A pair of Hutchinson players finished with double-doubles.
Kadeem Allen had a game-high 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Coreontae DeBerry had 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Darrick Wood scored 25 points for the Blue Dragons, and Austin Budke added 16 points.
