Cardinal golfers qualify for 321A state

The Hoisington Cardinals -- Maleigha Schmidt, Trinity Dolezal, Liza Ward, Addison Smith, Heavin Hipp and Chandra Ehler qualify for 321A state golf at Emporia.

BARTON COUNTY – The Hoisington Cardinal girls qualified for the 321A state golf championship Wednesday at Lake Barton Golf Course, which was wet after days of heavy rain. Maleigha Schmidt paced the Cardinals with a runner-up finish of 98, sparked by a pair of pars. Schmidt placed seventh at state last year with a 95 at Hays' Smoky Hill Country Club.

The Cardinals also counted scores by sixth-place Trinity Dolezal (106), ninth-place Liza Ward (111) and 26th-place Addison Smith (126). Heavin Hipp (130) and Chandra Ehler (145) also qualified.

Larned's Cathleen Cowell (116) captured the fifth individual qualifying spot.

Hays-Thomas More Prep (419), Hoisington (442) and Cheney (477) qualified teams for the 321A state tournament Oct. 15 at Emporia Municipal Golf Course. 

Defending 321A state champion Shannen Chin of Hays-TMP captured regional medalist honors with a 94. Chin overcame a 6-over-par 11 at the fifth hole. 

The temperature hit 52 degrees accompanied by a 12 mph north wind.
