HAYS — The Great Bend Panthers’ sixth-grade Western Kansas Football League team wrapped up its season on Halloween night by capturing first place in the Tournament of Champions.
The Panthers had a regular-season record of 4-2 and entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed.
In their opening round contest the Panthers quickly dispatched the No. 4 seed from Ellsworth, 26-0.
Great Bend’s second-round opponent was the No. 1-seeded team from McPherson. The Bullpups had not been scored upon all season long. The Panthers fought hard and earned a spot in the championship game with a 12–6 victory in overtime.
The championship game pitted two Barton County teams against each other as the 6-2 Panthers squared off against the 8-0 Hoisington Cardinals. The game was a defensive battle, and the Panthers won, 8-7.
